Storyboard meaning

Shot 1 - Close up of Elliot's face shows his tired and restless expression as if he doesn't want to wake up in the morning. He is in his room and this starts the story for the audience as they can relate to not wanting to get up in the morning, he opens his curtains and this lights the room up as well as the mood.

Shot 2 - Close up of the IPod and clicking on the song, the song starts playing and automatically cheers the mood up in the video.

Shot 3 - Elliot's facial expression, the camera is eye level with Elliot and this gives a clear view of his blank expression as if he is in a world of his own.

Shot 4 - Long shot of Elliot as he steps outside the house he bobs his head with a smile on his face, this shows to the viewers that he is now in a good mood as the music has brightened his day up.

Shot 5 - Close up shot of Elliot's shoes as he dances down the street, he has a smooth movement which gives off a more laid back attitude instead of if he had more stiff movements and give off a uncomfortable feeling.

Shot 6 - Long Shot of Elliot dancing down the street, this shot will make the audience laugh as it is the first full view shot of him dancing and this will possibly surprise the audience as it is a clip to watch.

Shot 7 - Long shot from the behind of Elliot dancing, this shows the direction he is dancing in carries on the funny image of the strange dance.

Shot 8 - Shot of a car driving past, as they are driving the driver and the passenger stare at Elliot as he is dancing, this is a build up of the next shot.

Shot 9 - Close up of the people in the car from behind, they both look at each other and start dancing. This would be funny to watch as this would be strange to see people driving and dancing at the same time

Shot 10 - The car drives past and the camera carries on following Elliot as he dances along.

Shot 11 - Elliot Crosses the road without looking to his left or right, this shows to the audience that he is in a state of trance and isn't focusing on his surroundings.

Shot 12 - This shot shows Elliot approaching the top of the bridge, he is going up a steep incline yet he is still dancing effortlessly, this gives the audience the idea that the song possibly gives you unnatural source of energy that helps you glide past anything that may be a burden in real life.

Shot 13 - Long shot of Elliot dancing across the bridge, this shot shows that he is high up and is looking down on traffic, this suggests that the song gives you the power to feel like you're above or on top of the world.

Shot 14 - Close up of feet as he dances across the bridge, this keeps the smooth flow of his dance present throughout the video.

Shot 15 - Long shot of people sat on a bench going on with their everyday life, Elliot dances past and they watch him with a confused expression, this shows the two topics of reality and fantasy blending together through different characters.

Shot 16 - The people who were sat on the bench get up and start following Elliot whilst dancing, this is very over the top and therefore will make the audience laugh, it also shows how the song is infectious and can easily be contracted by people bringing them into this 'fantasy' world.

Shot 17 - Shot of Elliot dancing down the street with the two people from the bench also dancing behind him. This shot clearly shows that they are following him and clarifies that the song is contagious.

Shot 18 - Close up of all the characters legs, this will show the flow of the dance and how it gives everyone the same sense of rhythm.

Shot 19 - Elliot dances with the sun in the background, this shot is dramatic and also shows that he has been dancing throughout the full day.

Shot 20 - Close up of a character eating chicken, as he bites into the chicken Elliot dances past and gets automatically enticed by Elliot's dance and starts to follow him. This gives the idea that the song gets more and more powerful as it progresses and therefore causes more people to follow.

Shot 21 - Long shot of all the characters following Elliot whilst dancing, this carries on the flow of everyone dancing.

Shot 22 - Medium close up of the character eating chicken whilst dancing, this shows the audience that he can't control his movement even though he is still eating.

Shot 23 - This shot shows all of the characters following Elliot back over the bridge whilst dancing, this suggests to the audience that they have been dancing all day and haven't stopped.

Shot 24 - Close up of Elliot's face with his headphones on. This shot simply shows to the audience that he is still listening to the song and is still unaware that people are following him.

Shot 25 - Close up of Elliot's face as the song stops, his facial expression changes back as if he has come back to reality.

Shot 26 - The rest of the characters following him and look round confused as they are unaware that they have been following him.

Shot 27 - Final shot. Everyone takes a final look round before walking off in different directions to go back to what they were originally doing before the song started.

Effect
Shot
Meaning
Fade captions in and out. White font.
2
This is to display the title of the song and the artist smoothly to the audience. The white text is to not distract the audience’s attention from the music video.
Sound effect of a clock ticking.
From shot 1 to shot 9
The clock is ticking in the background to give some sound to the music video and to give the sense of somebody waking up in the morning.
Sound effect of curtains opening
3
As the scene is quiet this is to make it seem real when the young man opens the curtains.
Increased levels
Shot 1-12 excluding shot 4.
This is to make the colours of the inside of the young man’s house sharper for the audience, making it look more professional. Shot 4 wasn’t edited with levels as the light from outside would be too bright.
Match on action
6-8
This is to keep with continuity as the man walks up and changes song on the ipod.
Speed Increase
10 and 11
To make the zoom in and out of the man more quickly and keep the audience interested. It is also to create time for when the chorus of the song kicks in and he can head out the door.
Additive Dissolve
11
This is to make the transition from the last shot smooth and to signify the man is possibly in a dream or magical and can immediately get changed.
Reverse Speed
14
Without this continuity would be lost as the man would be dancing in the opposite direction to the previous shot.
Cross Dissolve
23 to 24

This is a smooth transition to indicate that time has passed from the last shot and the man is now dancing in new scenery.
Cross Dissolve
24-25
This is also a smooth transition to indicate time has passed and the mans journey continues into a new place.
Match on Action
24-28
This is to make the scene where the boy eating chicken notices and starts following the dancing man smoothly.
Cross Dissolve
29-30
A cross dissolve is to create a smooth transition between the shots between the two scenes.
Match on Action
31-36
These shots makes the music video more interesting as we can see the two boys faces and them having a chat, but at the same time we can see the other two boys approaching towards them dancing. This makes the audience anticipated to await if the boys will join the dancing que.
Slow Motion
37,39 and 41

This slow motion was to fit in with the guitar solo of the song. If the boys were dancing at normal speed it would not fit the pace of the song.
Match on Action
37-41
This is so that we can see the faces of the dancers and their legs as they dance along. This makes the video more interesting to watch.
Cross Dissolve
44-45
This is to make it clear that time has past again, but since the woodland can be seen in the background it only makes it appear like the dancers have progressed a short distance. If all the scenes of walking through the woodlands were filmed there would not be enough time left in the song.
Match on Action
45-48
This match on action fits with the pace of the song, we can see the boys approaching the bridge and dancing and then we can see them going off over the bridge. It also makes it more interesting that the dancers are dancing on different sides of the camera and this is consistent in both of the shots.
Cross Dissolve
49
This is a good way to end the music video instead of it cutting away, the cross dissolves makes the feeling that the main character is going off onto another journey.

Before hand

We researched music videos individually so we could get a good idea of what we could achieve. Our group decided on the song Don’t Stop by Foster The People as it has a good head bopping tune and this gave us our idea.
Our idea is that someone will wake up and turn their iPod on, walk out and start bopping and the person will be infectious. People will follow him etc. Also we developed our idea with a story board which told us our idea would be possible and really brought it to live.
We also have produced a shot list, screen play, script and a treatment PowerPoint.
