Music Video Analysis: Beautiful by Christina Aguilera

Song Title: Beautiful

Artist: Christina Aguilera

Target Audience: The song and music video is mainly aimed at people who would not be classed as mainstream but alternative. Such as: gay, anorexic and overweight. Or are treated differently because of the life they choose to lead e.g people who are transvestite. This means that the target audience is also for people with low self esteem of all ages.

Narrative/Concept/Performance: The music video has self contained narrative from individual stories. The girl with anorexia is at first self conscious about the way that she looks and in the end smashes the mirror due to either she has overcome what people think or she doesn't want to listen to them. Christina Aguilera singing is performance at first but later becomes narrative when she's looking in the mirror reflecting on herself.

Genre: The genre for the song is pop but the genre for the music video is Drama.

Representation- Who? What? and How?: People who are not mainstream are represented as being insecure. Bullying is also represented as being done to those who have an indifference such as the girl with braces. This also represents youth as being cruel. The people who have these issues are represented as having to change so they are not bullied like the skinny boy doing weights. It is also represented that you can be proud of who you are such as the gay couple.

Themes:
  • Love
  • Hate
  • Passion
  • Insecurity
  • Beauty: Inner/Outer
  • Bullying
  • Homosexuality
  • Anorexia

Personal and Emotional Response: Us as the audience are affected in that we may reflect on how we have been bullied upon one time and everyone is insecure about something. Personally a wow factor came over me and the realisation that this happens everywhere in the world. A disturbing feeling came over when the two gays were kissing a seeing the transvestite was strange as I never see them.

Mise-En-Scene:
-Settings and Props: Disused and empty house which Christina Aguilera sings in indicating loneliness. Their is also a lot of shots of bedrooms as this is the only place people can get away and reflect on their lives. Here they can be themselves and not judged.

-Character and Performance: Certain characters are showing very sad emotions indicating they are either not happy with what they look like or what people think about them. This does not apply for the gay couple who have a proud face enjoying the life they lead. The picture to the right indicates a face of desperation as if she is in desperate need for help.

-Costume, Hair and Make Up: Many character faces are very pale displaying deeply saddened emotions. Costume of certain illustrates their lifestyle. Such as the transvestite is wearing make up making the audience aware of what he is. The man on the bus with the mohawk is wearing black fishnet clothes and black eye shadow signifying he is a goth.

-Lighting and Colours: For many parts of the video it has dark lighting maybe possibly to show their is no hope. However when Christina Aguilera is singing the room is bright and light is shining through the windows. Possibly indicating that their is hope and she is giving it by saying everyone is beautiful.

Diegetic and Non Diegetic Sound: Their is no diegetic sound throughout the whole video, the song non diegetic music carries through to the end.

Editing: Slow motion is used a lot in the video to display character emotion, either: sad, proud or angry. At first the transition between shots and individual stories is slow as the song pace is slow and the characters are being introduced but later on this becomes quicker as character's perception on life changes, these are jump cuts. Other editing consists of shot reverse shot, black and white and colour grading editing.

Camera Work: In the video their is a lot of high angle shots of character's indicating their vulnerability and possibly insecurity. However the camera is level for certain characters like the gay couple indicating they are not letting society look down on them. This eventually happens to all the characters, the camera becomes level indicating we see them as equals to us by the end.
Storyline: Built up of about 6 individual stories from people who lead different lives. These people could be rejected from mainstream society for who they are.
