Music Video Analysis: Everybody's Changing by Keane

Song Title: Everybody's Changing

Narrative/Concept/Performance: Most of this song is performance by Keane and in particular the lead singer Tom Chaplin. This performance switches from the flashing orange background on the infinity wall to Keane live concerts. Their is elements of spookyness on the fairground but this is not really a narrative but more of a concept.

Genre:
Song: Pop Rock/Piano Rock
Music Video: Thriller with elements of horror.

Representation- Who? What? and How?: The band is represented as being mysterious with a lot of their faces being hidden a lot of the time due to flashes and blurs. When on stage they are represented as having control over the fans and have them in the palm of their hand. The white lights shine bright through the black and white filter makes Keane the pure focal point. The lyrics "Everybody's Changing" mixed with the fairground setting makes it seem lonely. The cupid is old and deteriorated meaning that he cant help anyone no more.

Themes:
  • Mystery
  • Fame
  • Rocking
Personal and Emotional Response: My personal response when watching this video was to start shuffling to the song. Watching Keane dancing to the song and the crowd rocking to the song makes me feel like I want to dance as well.

Mise-En-Scene:

-Settings and Props: Their is full band equipment on the stage during the concert and the old fairground props like the horses and the cupid makes it seem creepy and spooky.

-Character and Performance: Keane's lead singer Tom Chaplin is holding the microphone close and is sweating on the concert indicating he is passionate in singing the song and making sure the crowd enjoy it. Even the fellow band members are being passionate on the drums and on the piano. The band are also swaying and dancing to the song. In turn this gets the audience into the song and also wanting the need to dance.

-Costume, Hair and Make Up: The band members are all wearing different clothes, possibly indicating they have different personalities. Tom Chaplin's long hair is sweating and looks untidy on stage whereas on the infinity wall it is tidy. This could symbolise that he has changed as the song suggests. Because Keane isn't hard rock genre of music they are wearing smart clothing, unlike full hard on rockers which are stereotyped to look untidy with leather jackets etc.

-Lighting and Colours: Their is flashing orange on the background of the infinity wall and flashing white lights when Keane are performing on stage. The lighting sometimes goes really bright. The flashing orange writing could indicate danger.

Diegetic and Non Diegetic Sound: Their is no digetic sound in the music video and is just the non-diegetic sound of the song.

Editing: Editing in the video includes the flashing lights of the infinity wall and the grey filter over the concert archive footage. In the video the contrast of lead singer Tom Chaplin and the band is enhanced to bring the colours in his skin. The contrast on the fairground cutaways is reduced to give a sinister effect.

Camera Work: Their is often close ups of different members of the band particularly Tom Chaplin. When they are performing on the concert their is low angled shots of Keane to show their authority over the crowd.

Storyline: Their is no storyline in the music video.
